Interior of the Barrack Battery
1855-1856Salted paper print | 24.2 x 29.3 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2500707
Photograph of the interior of the barrack battery after the Siege of Sevastopol. The photograph shows a steep earth wall, reinforced with wicker fencing, sandbags and wood. There is a large cannon at the bottom of the wall and two smaller cannons raised on wooden bases so they are pointing out of the battery.
After the French captured the Malakoff redoubt on the 8th September 1855, forcing the Russians to abandon the city, the allied forces entered Sevastopol and occupied the remaining fortifications.
