Hut of the Commander of the Redan
1855-1856Salted paper print | 22.0 x 29.4 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2500700
Photograph of the hut of the Commander of the Redan after the fall of Sevastopol. The hut is made of stone with earth piled on top and a makeshift wooden porch. The walls to either side are reinforced with wicker fencing and sandbags. The ground in front of the hut is littered with cannonballs, wood and other debris and there are several large holes in the foreground.
The British made two unsuccessful attacks on the Redan fortification, a Russian stronghold, during the Siege of Sevastopol. The siege eventually ended on the 8th September 1855 when the French captured the nearby Malakoff redoubt, forcing the Russians to abandon the city.
