Mar 1855Albumen print | 27.7 x 35.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2500490
Photograph of Balaklava showing the hospital to the right. There is a building with a tiled roof in the foreground and the rooftops of the town are spread out behind. Beyond the town is the harbour, with several ships anchored to the left. Small groups of tents can just be made out on the hills behind.
The town of Balaklava with its port and purpose built railway yard were of strategic significance throughout the Crimean War.
