Beyond is the harbour with the buildings of the town across the water and a camp on the bank to the left. There is a large number of ships in the harbour and the old Genose Castle can be seen on hillside behind. The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. Supplies arrived by ship into the small harbour and were transported by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol.
