1855-1856Salted paper print | 25.3 x 29.3 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2500728
Photograph of Balaklava. In the foreground there is a group of tents and a soldier standing in front of a corrugated metal hut. Directly behind there are thirteen wooden huts in three rows. Beyond is the harbour with the buildings of the town across the water and a camp on the bank to the left. There is a large number of ships in the harbour and the old Genose Castle can be seen on hillside behind.
The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. Supplies arrived by ship into the small harbour and were transported by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol.
