Photograph of General Pennefather (1800-1872) with members of his staff including Captain Wing, Captain Layard (1819-1855), Captain Ellison (1831-1908), Colonel Wilbraham (1811-1909), Colonel Percy Herbert (1822-1876), Major Thackwell (1781-1859) and Dr Wood. General Pennefather is sitting on a chair in the centre of the group, facing partly left with his legs crossed. Men stand and sit to either side of him. All are wearing military uniform and several carry swords. There is a tent behind them. This photograph, printed by Jabez Hughes in 1883, is a carbon print pasted over the original photograph.

During the Crimean War General Pennefather was responsible for the dramatic allied victory at the Battle of Inkerman.
