5 May 1855

Albumen print | 14.8 x 16.6 cm (image) | RCIN 2500434

Photograph of General Cissé with officers and soldiers of General Bosquet's Division, including the painter (Paul) Alexandre Protais, the commander Henry and Captain Lourde. The men are gathered in a group with two men sitting on folding chairs and the rest standing or sitting on the ground. They are wearing a mix of military uniforms, with a Zouave soldier standing to the far left. There is open land behind.

General Cissé was the Chief of Staff to General Bosquet, one of the senior French military figures during the Crimean War.
Protais (1826-1890) was a painter of military scenes. He was attached to Bosquet's staff during the war, and some of his sketches were published in Illustration Journal Universal in 1855. Drawings survive in the Musée de l'Armée, Paris.
