Salted paper print | 14.1 x 10.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2500076

Photograph of General Alfonso Ferrero della Marmora standing facing left. He is wearing military uniform and the insignia of the Legion of Honour of France and the Order of the Bath. He is holding a sword in his left hand. There is a bicorn hat on the small table beside him to the left and there is a patterned curtain draped to the right.

General Alfonso Ferrero della Marmora commanded the Sardinian forces on the side of the Allies during the Crimean War. He had a distinguished military career, and held the post of Minister of War before and after the campaign. In 1856, during a visit to England, he had several conversations with Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. They discussed the troops and the conduct of the war, and the situation in Italy. The Queen found him 'so gentlemanlike, sensible, agreeable & amiable' and on 24 January 1856, she invested him with the Order of the Bath.
