Photograph of four officers of the 42nd Regiment. Two officers stand to the left looking right with one seated in the centre on a rock covered with animal furs and the fourth standing to the right facing left. They all wear military uniform with the officer on the far left wearing a kilt and the officer beside him wearing a tartan jacket. Several carry long swords. There are two tents and a wooden hut on the hillside behind them. The 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot, also known as the Black Watch, formed part of the Highland Brigade during the Crimean War.
