Photograph of the entrance to the harbour at Balaklava. Ships with tall masts are docked along each side of the entrance to the harbour, and more densely inside it. Behind the harbour are the buildings of the town, dominated by the steep hill beyond.
The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. Supplies arrived by ship into the small harbour and were transported by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol.
