Photograph of the English batteries in front of Sevastopol. An earth wall reinforced with sandbags extends across the breadth of the scene. Cannons are spaced at intervals along the wall and there are piles of earth and ammunition behind. Hills can be seen in the distance.
The Siege of Sevastopol lasted eleven months, with the allied British, French and Turkish forces eventually capturing the city on the 8th September 1855.
