Albumen print | 19.2 x 14.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2500345

Photograph of Cornet Henry John Wilkin mounted on a horse facing partly right. He is wearing the full military uniform of his regiment the 11th Hussars including a bearskin hat with a plume. He is resting his right hand on his hip and holds the reins in his left hand. There is a tent to the right and a hillside can be seen behind.

Cornet Wilkin served as Assistant Surgeon to the 11th Hussars during the Crimean War. He charged with the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. As a surgeon he would not have been expected to charge with the regiment, but he did so nevertheless. Wilkin served in the Crimea from the first landing to the end of the war and later served with the 7th Hussars in India, where he was severely wounded in the action at Lucknow in 1857.
