Photograph of Colonel Shadforth and soldiers of the 57th Regiment, with Inkerman in the distance. The soldiers are arranged in formation on the hillside, several carrying flags. The senior officers stand in a group in the centre. All are wearing military uniform. There is a large camp in the valley behind, and two men sit in the foreground facing away from the camera.
The 57th Regiment served during the Crimean War and were photographed on a number of occasions by Roger Fenton. Colonel Shadforth died during the Battle of the Great Redan.
