Battery before the Redan
1855-1856Salted paper print | 15.7 x 28.8 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2500702
Photograph of the battery in front of the Redan after the fall of Sevastopol. A wall created from earth and sandbags runs across the centre of the photograph. Cannons stand at intervals along the wall, with large piles of cannonballs and other ammunition nearby. Five soldiers are gathered around one of the cannons. Hills can be seen in the distance.
The British made two unsuccessful attacks on the Redan fortification, a Russian stronghold, during the Siege of Sevastopol. The siege eventually ended on the 8th September 1855 when the French captured the nearby Malakoff redoubt, forcing the Russians to abandon the city.
