Photograph of the Barrack Hospital at Scutari, Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). In the foreground there is a long wooden hut with a tiled roof. Behind is the barrack style hospital, with a seven storey tower at each corner. On the terrace in front of the hospital to the left there is a line of gun carriages.
The Selimiye Barracks were used by the British as a military hospital during the Crimean War, with casualties transported by ship across the Black Sea. Florence Nightingale, the pioneering nurse, lived in a tower of the barracks whilst working in the hospital.
