Balaklava, with a distant view of Kadikoi
1855-1856Salted paper print | 16.0 x 28.4 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2500739
Photograph of Balaklava, with a distant view of Kadikoi. In the foreground is the harbour, with ships grouped very closely together. Tents are spaced across the hillside behind, and the church at Kadikoi can be seen in the middle distance.
The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. Supplies arrived by ship into the small harbour and were transported by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol. The Battle of Balaklava was fought in the countryside around the small village of Kadikoi, just north of Balaklava.
