Balaklava, from the camp of the Scots Fusilier Guards
26 - 26 Mar 1855Albumen print | 25.7 x 35.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2500492
Photograph of Balaklava taken from the camp of the Scots Fusilier Guards. There is a small group of tents in the foreground with horses grazing outside of them. Further down the valley there are more tents and a wooden hut. Beyond is the town of Balaklava and its harbour, where a large number of ships are anchored. The old Genoese Castle can be seen on the hill behind the harbour.
The town of Balaklava with its port and purpose built railway yard were of strategic significance throughout the Crimean War.
