8 Dec 1860

Albumen print | 8.0 x 5.6 cm (image) | RCIN 2900423

Photograph of a full length double portrait of Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78), and Prince Louis, later Grand Duke of Hesse (1837-92). Princess Alice stands on the left, facing towards Prince Louis. She places her hands in a muff and wears a bonnet and winter coat. Prince Louis stands on the right, facing towards the camera. He holds a top hat in his left hand. The photograph was taken outside and a town or village can be seen in the background. The couple appear to stand on some mats on wet sand.

The photographs taken of the couple in December 1860 are most probably informal engagement photographs. They married in 1862.
