Photograph taken within the grounds of Balmoral. Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse (1843-78), is depicted seated side-saddle on pony, looking to the front. Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught (1850-1942), stands facing three-quarters to the left, holding the reigns of the horse. He wears Highland dress. John Brown (1827-83) stands on the left, by the pony's head.
