Hand-coloured photograph of a full length portrait of Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught (1850-1942) standing, facing three-quarters to the right. He turns his head to face the camera and poses with his right arm across the back of a chair. He wears the costume of the sons of King Henry IV based on those worn by actors in the final scene of Charles Kean's production of Richard II, performed at Windsor Castle in February 1857. The Prince's wore the costumes at the bal costumé, 7 April 1859.
The fancy dress ball was held to celebrate Prince Leopold's sixth birthday, and was attended by children between the ages of 6 and 14.
