Memorial works

Following Albert’s premature death, Victoria commissioned the creation of photographs and decorative objects that memorialised her beloved husband

QUEEN VICTORIA, QUEEN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM (1819-1901)

    Brass tablet

    c.1860-81

    Brass tablet with engraved design | 0.5 x 8.6 x 13.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 55344

Rect brass tablet with black cotton ribbon attached. The ribbon extends from either side. The front features an engraved depiction of vine leaves and scrollwork. The ribbons function to hold documents and various photographs of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children and grandchildren to the brass tablet. The documents include an envelope recording life dates of various individuals and a transcription by Queen Victoria of 'In Memoriam' by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

A label attached to the work, possibly attached following Queen Victoria's death, states the tablet was always placed on Queen's Victoria's writing table.
