Albumen print | 17.0 x 38.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2700176

Photograph of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's (1617-82) painting 'Moses and the water from the rock of Horeb', completed in 1670. The prophet Moses can be seen standing in the centre of the picture, looking up to the sky with his hands clasped in prayer. Various men, women and children hold cups from which they drink. A child sitting on a mule and facing the viewer, points to the rock from which flows water; Moses was commanded by God to smite the rock so that it would emit water for the people to drink.
