FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

Works of Art Exhibited at Marlborough House, 1854: Vase by Wedgwood

1854

Albumen print | 17.3 x 12.1 cm (image) | RCIN 2800210

Photograph of a jasperware vase with reliefs of 'The Procession of the Deities'. The vase is amphora-shaped, consisting of two handles and a narrow neck. The figure decoration is taken from an Athenian marble relief of the 1st century BC. The figure at the centre is Hermes, preceeded by Poseidon and followed by Demeter.

The jasperware vase was created by Josiah Wedgewood (1730-95). Jasperware was developed by Wedgewood and refers to a type of matte, unglazed stoneware. The vase is probably the same object that is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (museum number 3463-1855).
