Works of Art Exhibited at Marlborough House, 1854: Iron Dagger and Knocker from Nuremberg
1854Albumen print | 18.4 x 12.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2800196
Photograph of three metal objects, a dagger, door knocker and key, fixed onto a wooden pane. The dagger's handle is in the shape of a male soldier standing on a large snake and flanked by eagles. The dagger's scabbard, or sheath, is decorated by three panels. The main panel, in the centre, depicts a man in armour. The other two smaller panels are decorated with scrolls incorporating vegetal and animal elements. The door knocker, on the right, has a scalloped shell top decorated with open scrollwork. The hinged part of the knocker is decorated by a male figure standing on pedestal within a gothic-style niche. A similar design is used for the two elements on each side of the knocker plate.
