AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Various compositional studies

1858

Albumen pint? | RCIN 2864363

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1508) depicting various compositional studies now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 260). Annotated on the verso.

In the catalogue of the Italian drawings of the Albertina (see Bibliographic References), it is stated that Michelangelo's unfinished statue of St Matthew (1505-06) now in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Florence (inv. no.1077) could have been one of the models of the male half-figure. Joannides (see Bibliographic References), pointed out that the figure at the top right is related to the figure at the right in the "Disputa" (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament, painted by Raphael around 1508-09 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican), as are two of the putti depicted in this drawing.

A copy of this photograph (RCIN 854341) can be found in the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection, portfolio 47 (970607)
