'The Baptism'

1857

Albumen print | 30.3 x 22.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2081370

Photograph of a painting of 'The Baptism of Christ'. Christ stands at the centre of the image. On the left, two men help Christ disrobe. St. John the Baptist stands on the right, holding a cross in his left hand. He pours water over Christ's feet with his right hand. There is a dove in the upper area of the painting. The painting is photographed in its frame. A number written on a piece of paper is attached to the frame, in the lower left corner.

At the time of the photograph, the painting was attributed to B. Franco, possibly Giovanni Battista Franco (c.1510 – 1561). The painting is now attributed to Orazio Samacchini (1532-77).
