Prince Albert recognised the importance of photography to record and document notable exhibitions and works of art

AFTER A WORK PREVIOUSLY ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Study of a naked figure clinging to a wall

1858

Albumen print? | RCIN 2864346

A photograph of a drawing now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.4882), clearly related to the figure of naked man hanging on the wall in the attempt of escaping from the burning city on the left of Raphael's fresco of 'The Fire in the Borgo', executed in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican in c.1514. The authorship of the drawing (sometimes attributed to Raphael and sometmes to his School) is subject of much debate. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

A copy of this photograph (852831) can be found in the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection, portfolio 29 (970588)
