GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

The Albert Cairn Balmoral, distant View

1864

Albumen print | 7.8 x 7.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2117216

Photograph from an album of a view of Craig Lurachain on the Balmoral estate. The hill is located in the distance. At the top of the hill, barely visible, is the Prince Albert Cairn. In the middle distance flows the River Dee. In the foreground, a metal fence runs horizontally down the hillside.

The cairn was built in memory of Prince Albert (1819-61) in 1862, following his death in December 1861. The tablet on the cairn reads 'To the beloved memory of Albert, the great and good Prince Consort, erected by his broken hearted widow, Victoria R, 21st August 1862.'
