13 - 13 Oct 1858Salted paper print | 13.3 x 18.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2160323
Photograph from an album of two stag's heads on the ground that were shot by the Prince Consort on the Balmoral estate. On the left is a Royal stag's head shot at Drummaur. On the right is a stag's head with 11 points, Royal on one side, that was shot at Stableadh.
This photograph was taken by the partnership of George Washington Wilson and John Hay who were commissioned to record the building of the new Balmoral Castle in the spring of 1854. By the end of the year, and with works on the Castle almost complete, the duo were asked to photograph the keepers and Jagers who accompanied the Prince Consort during the hunting of deer on the Balmoral estate. In addition to these portraits, photographs were made of the game that was shot by the Prince.
