Stag Shot by the Prince at Feithort - October 6 1856

6 Oct 1856 - 6 Oct 1857

Salted paper print | 13.2 x 20.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2160328

Photograph of a large stag with 9 point antlers, lying on the ground on it's right side with a single bullet wound to the left shoulder after being shot by the Prince Consort at Feithort.

This photograph was possibly taken on the same day that Queen Victoria recorded in her journal for the 6th October 1857: '...went through the Corrie Buie, along the pretty new path, to the foot of the long, steep ascent to Feithort, where we got off and walked up, finding ourselves suddenly nearly at the top of the path, & coming upon Albert's little encampment...we waited about 1/4 of an hour, & then Albert appeared, saying he thought he had shot 3 stags, but had only got 1 bad one.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 6th October 1857
