GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Falls of the Garr-valt

c. 1862

Albumen print | 11.1 x 16.9 cm (image) | RCIN 2160365

Photograph of a single arched wooden bridge spanning the Garr-Valt river near Braemar, Scotland. In the centre stands a man leaning over the handrail and looking down at the river. In the foreground, the river flows over large boulders. Flanking the falls is the forest of Ballochbuie.

Wilson took a number of views of the Upper Falls of the Garr-Valt, featuring a bridge with a single figure standing in the centre. The enduring popularity of these views strengthened his status as one of Scotland's most successful commercial photographers.
