UNKNOWN PERSON

'Die Luthersbuche'; Luther beech tree

1862

Coloured engraving | 11.1 x 16.9 cm (image) | RCIN 2117184

Coloured engraving of Die Luthersbuche. A small group of people look at a monument. Two women and a child travel away from the foreground, with sticks on their back.

The monument marks the spot where Martin Luther (1483-1546) was kidnapped for his own safety. A beech tree, called the Luther beech, had marked the spot, until 1841, when the tree was destroyed in a storm. The monument seen in this print was erected in 1857 on the same spot as the tree.
