Birkhall

dated

Albumen print | 10.8 x 8 cm (image) | RCIN 2117262

Photograph of Birkhall as seen through trees which stand in the foreground. A low stone wall also occupies the foreground and lawns surround the house itself.

Birkhall was bought by Prince Albert as part of the Balmoral Estate and given to his son Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales as a Scottish retreat in 1849 but he only visited Birkhall once. Queen Victoria re-acquired the house and it eventually passed by descent to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. It is now the Scottish residence of TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, known in Scotland as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.
