Albumen print | 8.5 x 11.1 cm (image) | RCIN 2117319

Photograph of the inauguration and unveiling of the Prince Albert Memorial statue in Coburg. There is a pavilion to left, for Queen Victoria and her family, and officials, and the square is filled with many people. People watch the ceremony from the windows of buildings looking out onto the square.

In the square is a group of women wearing white dresses,  described as 'white clad maidens of the town, one half with the British, & the other with the Saxon colours, standing on either side & making a very pretty effect' [quoted from Queen Victoria's Journal, volume 54, p.239]. Queen Victoria also described the square as being beautifully decorated with garlands and flag poles. The unveiling of the statue took place in the afternoon of Saturday 26 August 1865.
