She turns her head towards the left and looks ahead, away from the camera. She holds a long beaded necklace or rosary with both hands in front of her body. 

Stuart-Wortley, later Lady Welby, was Maid of Honour to Queen Victoria (1819-1901) from 1861 to 1863. After she married and had three children, she decided to re-educate herself and became an influential English philosopher of language, musician and water-colour artist.
