ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Display of stags shot by the Prince

12 Oct 1857

Salted paper print | 9.3 x 11.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2160326

Photograph from an album of four stag heads and one roe deer head that were shot by the Prince Consort at Cromie Bray Glen Beg on the Balmoral estate, lying on the ground amongst stones and heather. In the background is trees and scrubland.

This photograph was taken on the day that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert spent their last hours in the 'old' Balmoral Castle. The next time they returned to the area, it was to reside at the newly constructed Balmoral Castle. Queen Victoria recorded in her journal: 'It was the last time we should live in the old house, which has been a good old friend. We went to the new house, Albert's favourite resort, whence the view is so very beautiful.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 12th October 1854
