Raphael's career as an architect saw him work on St Peter's Basilica, Vatican

AFTER PAUL LETAROUILLY (1795-1855)

Palazzo Alberini

published 1840-1855

Tracing in pen and ink | 16.1 x 17.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854186

A pen and ink tracing of a print depicting the elevation of Palazzo Alberini, building that was commissioned by Giulio Alberini and executed possibly on Raphael's project between 1514 and 1521. This print was published by Paul Letarouilly as plate 106 of "Edifices de Rome moderne ou recueil des palais, maisons, églises, couvents et autres monuments publics et praticuliers les plus remarquables ...dessinés, mesurés et publiés par Pl. Letarouilly" (vol. IV, 1840-1855). This drawing is lettered with a title in French and a scale. This drawing and RCIN 854187 were part of the same sheet, alongside another complete elevation of the palace, a plan and the left side of the elevation.

Following a trip to Italy in 1820, Letarouilly published his monumental work, appeared between 1840 and 1855, illustrated with prints of the buildings of Rome that he executed.

Scholars debated the dates and the architects involved in the project: Vasari wrote that Giulio Romano was in charge of the workshop and the figure of Pietro Rosselli has also been associated with the final design. Pagliara has more recently excluded the presence of Rosselli and limited the involvement of Giulio Romano only for the period following the death of Raphael. Pagliara therefore states that Raphael was the architect of the project and designed the facade in 1514-1515 (see Bibliographic References).
