Raphael's career as an architect saw him work on St Peter's Basilica, Vatican

MASTER OF THE DIE (ACTIVE 1530-60)

A set of six grotesques

dated 1532

Engravings | RCIN 854235

A set of five engravings depicting grotesques that are part of a larger series of six prints dated 1532.

According to Bartsch, these prints reproduced drawings by Raphael, while Passavant attributed the drawings to Giovanni da Udine (see Bibliographic References). More recently, it has been noted that one of the prints shares many similarities with a drawing by Luzio Luzi in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1800), in which the same scene as in RCIN 854235.b (in reverse with some variations) is depicted. Therefore the scholars are inclined to attribute the drawings that these prints reproduce to Luzio Luzi (see Bibliographic References).
