Raphael's career as an architect saw him work on St Peter's Basilica, Vatican

A Palace in Montevecchio Square

published 1845

Etching | RCIN 854185

An etching depicting the facade of a palace in Montevecchio Square, Rome. This print was published by Carlo Pontani in "Opere architettoniche di Raffaello Sanzio, incise e dichiarate dall'Architetto Carlo Pontani", published in two volumes in 1841 and 1845. The print is lettered with the title in Italian and a scale. Signed by the printmaker. Annotated on the verso.

The building still stands in Montevecchio Square and it is probably identifiable with the palace that used to house the "Monte di Pietá" mentioned in a guide of the city of Rome of 1856 ("Roma descritta ne' suoi monumenti nelle sue attuali istituzioni", p. 100). This building appears to be the one bought by Pope Sixtus V in 1585 to accomodate the new offices of the Monte di Pietá (which in 1604 moved towards the Trinitá dei Pellegrini). Monte di Pietá is a religious organization founded for charity purposes in 1539, whose main activity consisted of money lending.
