JOHN SKIPPE (1742-1811)

A male term

c.1781-1783

Chiaroscuro woodcut | 23.3 x 14.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854239

A chiaroscuro woodcut by John Skippe reproducing a drawing of a male term now in the British Museum (inv. no. 1901,0417.30), where it is catalogued as anonymous. This print is lettered at the top with the attribution to Raphael: "R: V:". Not in Ruland (1876).

This print and RCIN 854238 are part of a larger series of chiaroscuro woodcuts after drawings of Old Masters executed by John Skippe, an amateur artist and connoisseur who amassed a substantial collection of predominantly Italian Renaissance drawings, possibly whilst travelling in Italy in the 1770s. He executed a number of chiaroscuro woodcuts from drawings in his collection which he published in two sets in 1782 and 1783.
